Hey, I just joined this group and want to put through an idea :

The kind of projects I'm more interested in are those which not only seek mere surprise or flamboyance but those which aim to produce some change, which aim to transform something. I don't mean to sound pedantic. We're not gonna change the world with a flash mob and whatever it is planned, it needs to sound fun to summon up enough people. But I do find much more interesting to work from whatever is present at the performance environment and to transform it inviting to some kind of reflection through an action which is both evocative and entertaining. To work, for instance, starting from the predominant feeling in a public space or the kind of personal relationships which develope within, the most common clothing which can be found in it or simply the space layout or prevailing color. Then change that, play with it and go back to "normal". To challenge reality, to question perception. Like the "Frozen Grand Central" mission in NYC where 200 "infiltrated" agents froze in movement for 5 minutes, transforming a venue of frantic activity into something quite different. It is not an ostentacious, boring claim, yet it is meaninful and challenges the usual state of things.

Any body sharing this vision? Comments? Proposals?

To non Catalan/Spanish speakers:

Great news!
Charlie Todd will come to ArtFutura (a festival that takes place in Barcelona from Thursday 29th October to Sunday 1st November) to give a conference (yay!), and we can be a part of it by waking up the little agents sleeping at the back of our minds and going to the great mp3 mission they’ve prepared for us!

Although there’s still plenty of time (well, there won’t be if we start procrastinating and saying things like “there’s plenty of time” ;), I’d like to know more or less how many people will be able to go.

As you know, “the more, the merrier”! :)

Let’s have fun!

First, sorry for the English. I am interested in joining this group but my Spanish is only elementary. I thought maybe I would have better luck posting in English this time. I have written a lot, so I really do apologise.

CHESS RE-ENACTMENT
Requirements:
16 pranksters, or 32.
Chess piece costumes for each person
The public, playing chess in Plaza Catalunya

Would it be possible if everyone dressed as a chess piece? So we have 8 pawns, a queen, a kind, 2 knights.... and so on.

Then we go to Plaza Catalunya where the old guys play chess.

Everyone hides. One person goes near the players and watches. This person is one of the pranksters, so he appears a little funny to the public. A guy dressed as a knight, watching a chess game. He plays his role, as if this is how he always dresses, etc. Perhaps he makes a comment on the particular chess piece that he is.

This might need ten minutes, because this person is responsible for choosing a "good" game. That is, a game that isn't too short or too long.

As soon as a new "good" game is starting, he gives a signal. Now the other 15 pranksters suddenly appear and all gather around the new game to watch. They leave enough space for spectators to see what is happening.

They stare intently at the board, waiting for the game to begin. Whatever they choose, casual silence will be needed to encourage the 2 public players to really start playing. This is a dangerous moment because the whole scene could fail here. We would need a backup plan.

Assuming the game does start, we all watch politely. We don't want to over-dramatise things and make the players feel like we are being patronising (or unoriginal) by oohing and ahhing at normal moves. A few nods, a few "mmms", perhaps some inhaling-through-the-teeth at most.

But when one piece is killed, we slowly start getting emotional...... annnnnnd well, things go from there. There is a lot of hilarious stuff we can do here, but it has to build up, piece by piece. The first death should only be a respectful handshake.

Examples:

* One of the prankster-pawns is the team mascot. Every time his piece is moved, everyone is cheering and supporting him. If that piece goes far we get more excited. If that piece dies, all hell breaks loose.

* At first dead pieces just fall over and die (after their actions/handshake/etc). Then they apologise to the king, and go to an area to sit and drink. They could support or abuse the team mascot from there.

* A big argument can be pre-planned, between (for example) a bishop, a castle and 3 pawns. When all 5 of these pieces are dead, the argument begins and it expands across the plaza. Rather than argue about chess logic (for this will irritate the players) it could be an argument about love triangles or something. Soon the king has to excuse himself and go to settle the arguing pranksters. The king returns to the game, apologises, and play continues. But across the plaza we can see (for example) the castle beating the crap out of the bishop. This would need to be choreographed but could be bloody funny.

* It would be good if 32 pranksters are involved, because it will mean more action without requiring any more time. If we have 32 people, we can start with 2 watchers. Also, we can pre-plan some different death routines, and stage a quick little fight every time a piece is lost.

When the game finally finishes, everyone cheers or cries, depending on who has lost. We talk and laugh etc, then slowly fall into happy silence again. Suddenly a watcher calls out to everyone... A new game is starting!! Everyone suddenly runs to the new game, crowds around and stares with crazy anticipation between the board and the player about the make the first move, once again. Then we all finish and leave hehehe.

Opinions? Anyone understand? I'm sorry... it's too much to even translate. =/

Wolas!
