We Cause Scenes

Lots of people like the idea of staging a musical. It's one of the most frequently suggested ideas, and the Food Court Musical is one of Improv Everywhere's biggest hits. We've discussed a variety of scenarios for doing one, and there seem to be an infinite variety of possible places and ways to do it.

So I took an idea to the guys who do a lot of the planning here, and got the go-ahead to do something about it. So here's what we're going to do...

We're going to create a sub-group within GuerilLA, the GuerilLA Spontaneous Musical Theatre Troupe. The goal is to create a spontaneous musical scene somewhere at random intervals, ideally about once every six weeks or so. Hence the name.

We'll operate as part of GuerilLA and take part in regular missions, but since musicals require a lot of planning and rehearsal, we need a specialized group to take them on. There are so many possible variations on the idea that doing more than one musical event won't seem like repeating ourselves. This will not be a one-time mission; it's an ongoing project, a series of missions. We should always have something brewing even while doing the many other things Agent A and company have planned

So I've decided to put it in motion, but I'm not really qualified to run it. I have zero musical ability and can't dance, and I'm far to ADD to organize anything. We're going to need a team to make this happen. I have some background in community theater and have been in a couple of musicals, and I'm kind of taking the position of being one of the conceptual guys in this project. What's your role?

We need:

An administrative type. Somebody with really scary organizational abilities to keep track of everything and make sure all the pieces are in place. Bean-counting and button-sorting are vital.

Choreographer(s).
Musical Director(s), both instrumental and vocal.
Songwriters and composers, for those all-original productions.
Costumers.

And a heck of a lot of singers, dancers, actors, gymnasts, musicians, jugglers, stilt-walkers, unicyclists and whatever else we can think of.

We should plan to meet somewhere and work this out. If you show up, you're one of the leaders.

Where and when?

The person who was going to write the song for our original musical seems to have vanished; is there anybody here with song-writing experience who wants to work on this?

Bad news. A train station musical has been done,... very well in fact. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EYAUazLI9k

That's a great one, to be sure. It doesn't interfere with our super-secret idea (ixnay on the aintray-ationstay, we haven't mentioned that part yet) in several key respects...

* it's in Belgium
* it's a dance performed to a very well-known song
* it uses the original performance recording, broadcast over the station's PA system
* it has no distinct characters
* it has no story

In contrast, our proposal is

* in L.A.
* includes live singing and musicians
* tells a story
* has characters who perform the song as part of their story

It's really a whole different concept.

I'd like to get back to work on this; has anyone heard from Rolfe?

Good points. Let's do it. Rolfe, where are you?

Is there a when/where to meet for this yet?

There's a where or two, but no when yet.

It's kind of a busy time of year, but we can plan a meeting for this weekend.

I had a major email crash a while back and lost all the addresses I'd previously collected, so anyone who wants to be involved in the Musicals needs to email me at jim@jimmacq.com so I can rebuild my mailing list.

What are the chances of arranging a meeting with everyone interested in being in the musical troupe sometime over Thanksgiving weekend? Maybe Saturday or Sunday afternoon?

There is a mission planned for Sunday, I believe. Maybe we can meet and discuss the plans immediately afterward.

Oooh when and where? I'm down for it. I was a MAJOR theatre geek in High School, and did some theatre in College....Sing and dancing are my thing, and I loveeee musicals. ;) And I'm down to help out, I do promotional/computer/street team stuff for a hobby (for bands, music, etc), so I'm good at organizing stuff.
