Picture this: hundreds of Phoenicians out enjoying the sights and sounds of First Friday in May. They're looking at art, enjoying the beautiful early May evening. And then they notice something rather... odd. A goodly number of people have gone stone-still. They aren't moving. They look as if they have been frozen in place, right in middle of whatever it was they were doing.
That would be us.
ImprovAZ will hold a "First Friday Freeze" on May 1st, 2009. Want to join us? Details are below. Want more info on what you may be getting yourself into? Check this video of a great freeze by the
NYC chapter.
Logistics:
Part of the fun is getting there. We have four "staging" areas. Your area is determined by your birth month, to keep the groups relatively the same size:
Jan - Mar: SW Corner of N 4th St. and E Garfield St.,
Apr - Jun: NW Corner of N 6th St. and E McKinley St.,
Jul - Sep: SW Corner of N 4th St. and E Roosevelt St.,
Oct - Dec: SE Corner of N 4th St. and E McKinley St..
Team captains will identify themselves by holding a helium balloon.

map here.
Freeze will occur once we have all converged on the intersection of North 5th St. and East Garfield St.
Time:
Meet at your respective stating areas no later than 6:30pm on May 1st. That will give you and your group ample time to meander toward the event location.
Instructions:
* Standing still for five minutes sounds easy. Standing still for five minutes standing on one foot bent over to pick up your keys is less so. Practice is your friend. Play around with poses and find one that you are comfortable holding. For five minutes.
* Please keep the poses -- and in fact all of your actions -- G-Rated. Nothing lewd, threatening or likely to draw the attention of police officers, please. The only thing "outrageous" about the event is that it is happening. Trying to add to that will only prove garish. Again, we highly recommend viewing the video of the NYC freeze.
* Plan ample time to arrive. If you choose to take the trolley to Roosevelt, you should arrive very, VERY early. The trolley is normally very be busy and if you do you may be late if you plan on arriving at 6:30. So plan accordingly. Or take alternate transportation. Early is better than late.
* Be at your designated meeting spot by 6:30 on May 1st. Your group leader will go over the specifics and any changes with you there.
* Once your group sets off, you are "in character". You aren't part of a group. You aren't there for anything more than looking at art. At least, on the outside.
o If you arrive after 6:30 and your group has departed, you missed it. See you next time. Enjoy the art.
* At approx 6:50 the team captains will release balloons; signaling you to freeze. Freeze. Don't react. Don't move. Be as still as you possibly can. Become one with your frozen-ness.
* Five minutes later you'll hear the air horn go off again; signaling you to unfreeze. And to continue on, as if nothing special happened. No hooting. No hollering. No high-fives. Just go about your evening.
* If you want, return to the 4th St & Garfield location at 7:30 to meet up and chat with people. This is optional.
You can RSVP at the
Facebook event.
