No direct recommendation, the whole class was an insight into jap. pop. culture- it's all worth seeing : P
I can give you a title you have or might not have already seen; definitely one of my favs, "Paprika".
The first season of Death note was pretty interesting too, and of course, Trigun is also in my favourites.
I am Majoring in History, so it was part of my major, but if I had been anything else, I would have made it an elective! Great class, highly recommended. You probably know of Tezuka indirectly, he was the first to break the anime barrier and mass popularisation of Manga. Ever heard of Astro-Boy? That's Tezuka.
Evangelion!!! Bien sur que oui! J'en est entendu parlé! I took a history of Japanese popular culture class at concordia University taught by professor Mathew Penny- which i STRONGLY recommend. Best class ever, one of the best teachers too. We cover the end of the Edo period and into the meji restoration, but the emphasis lies in the 20th century talking about manga, anime, film, fashion, music.... mostly manga film and anime though. From Myazaki and Kitano to The God of Manga Tezuka : D Delete Comment
